Embark on a journey through the life and works of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's iconic architect, in Colombo with Alphonso Stories. Explore his architectural gems, his city life, and the influence of notable artist friends.
Geoffrey Bawa is one of the most significant architects of Sri Lanka and among the most influential Asian architects of his generation. Colombo was the centre of his social and work life. Explore some of the works of Bawa, his home and his city life in this tour. The tour also covers the work of some of his notable friends who were leading figures in various arts industries.
Geoffrey Bawa gave Sri Lanka and the world sustainable architecture long before it became a fashionable trend. He was the pioneer of tropical modernism, a global design movement that focuses on a range of natural elements utilizing them to their utmost potential. This tour takes you on a journey through Bawa’s life via his work and works of his notable friends on the art, architecture and textile scene, such as Barbara (Barefoot), Minette (1st female architect) and Ena (batik).
Start with exploring Number 11, the hub of Bawa’s city life and hear some interesting stories about his work and life. The next stop is Gallery Café, another of Bawa’s exemplary works and enjoy the surroundings over a drink. Then proceed to the Seema Malaka Temple on Beira Lake, a temple redesigned in the 1970s by Bawa and end your tour with either an exhibition (if there is one on) or a trip to Barefoot.
