Bullock Cart ride


This is slow travel at its most compelling. The tour called ‘Bullock Cart Discoveries’ includes a visit to the farmlands of a village in the valleys beyond the Periyar Tiger Reserve in a bullock cart. A visit such as this provides insights into traditional ways of farming and the culture and lifestyle of the people there.     We will ride by bullock into the farmlands of a village hidden in the valley behind the mountains of Periyar Tiger Reserve. The village is rich in bird diversity and offers exciting new experiences for a serious bird watcher; it’s also a great time for novices too to enjoy this new adventure sport as it can take you into different terrains for good sightings. The diverse landscape of the region introduces us to vineyards, a variety of crops including produce such as mangoes, tamarind, onions and a score of other vegetables; you will love the scents and colours brought to the landscape with the sunflowers and jasmine that are grown here in abundance. The guide will help interpret how farming has been woven beautifully into the culture and the life of the villagers here. Adjust your rhythms to the slow pace of the village life, the tranquillity and innocence of the village folk. Enjoy the rural pastimes of cockfights and stick fights, quench your thirst with the nectar from tender coconuts….
