Kushti Akhara session with Pehelwans (wrestlers)

Kushti, the Indian form of wrestling has been a very old traditional sport in Punjab. These sons of the soil really known how to play in the mud and raise the sport of mud wrestling to highly competitive levels. Yes, its serious business!  In fact, all over the state, there are akhadas where one goes through rigorous training to be a successful pehelwan (wrestler). In fact, at village fairs, it even brought in quite a bit of money for the winners, as the stakes could be set quite high by the bidders. There are special kushti melas in villages where the winning pehelwan could walk away with prizes ranging from tractors, cars, motorcycles and even gold.

Why you will love it

  • Witness, or better still – join in the routines of the Pehelwans (wrestlers) up-close.
  • Understand the anatomical effect of the various exercise routines (to possibly incorporate some in your daily life!)
  • Witness a Dangal (wrestling match) from close quarters.
  • Understand the diet and lifestyle of a Pehelwan.
  • Get your hands muddy!

Why you will love it

Experience a day in the life of a Kushti Pehelwan! The session would be conducted in a Kushti Akhara (community wrestling place) and lead by skilled Pehelwans, assisted by our storyteller who is well-versed with the historical origins of Kushti and its cultural significance. Don’t just be a bystander jump into the fray, get down in the mud and try your hand at some good old fashioned kushti with a  pehelwan (wrestlers) up close. It will be a memory of substance forever!
