Magical Malabar Trail, Kannur

The legend-rich Malabar Coast of India hugs the western shoreline of Peninsular India from Konkan to Kanyakumari. The dancing waters of the Arabian Sea and the glittering network of its backwaters have scripted a beautiful narrative of exquisite nature-bound adventures for the global travelling community—including traders, seafaring adventurers and spiritual evangelists from olden times. Now tourists arrive in droves smitten by the charm and historical legacies of Malabar. While the mix of local communities have added many layers to its cultural heritage, economic needs have inspired new methods for survival and livelihoods. Coconut, rubber, arecanut, pepper, cashewnut and banana cultivation along with trading, ship building, fishing, coir craft have long been the economic mainstay in the region. Now low investment and its simple methods have been the key drivers for mussel culture (Perna viridis) in the Malabar area, where it has become me a big economic catalyst since 1996 with the success achieved in rearing and popularizing green mussel in the backwaters.

  • Learning all about mussel farming- a growing trend in Kerala’s backwaters narrative
  • A boat ride to a beautiful peninsular with a lovely walking trail
  • A pleasurable ramble past serene backwaters and coconut-lined unpolluted beaches

Your 4-hr adventure on this legendary coastal belt begins with a visit to a local mussel farm. It’s a hands-on experience getting a handle on the growing muscle farming business in the Malabar region.    A boat ride now brings you to a narrow 200-meter-wide peninsula, with the waters of the Arabian Sea on one side, the serene backwaters on the other, and an estuary at one end. Through the pleasant cover of a swathe of coconut trees, and a winding trail is an alluring treat for a quite walk. There are no roads here, so no cars or bikes—just nature and quiet.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the backwaters, and if you head out in a westerly direction, you’ll reach a quiet, empty beach. Lunch will be served in one of the quiet spots along the way. If anyone prefers a shorter walk, there are a few places where the boat can pick you up. Then it’s time to head back to the mainland from one of these spots and return to the resort.
