Polonnaruwa’s Primates

Visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and the monkeys that occupy the area. These impressive ruins have been carefully preserved and have become home to three species of primates. Get up close with these cheeky animals and learn about their behaviour.

  • Meet the ancient city’s primate populations in Polonnaruwa.
  • Study the inhabitants of “Monkey Kingdom” with a primate researcher.
  • Observe the behaviour of purple-faced leaf monkeys, toque macaques and grey langurs.

Explore the Polonnaruwa monkey kingdom, home to a thriving population of three types of monkeys - macaques, grey langurs and the purple-faced leaf monkey. Start the tour early morning and watch as these primates wake up and follow them closely for a small part of the day, as they venture to feed themselves and interact socially with each other, as well as with other species and other animals including humans.

The centre has been eulogized by Disney's Monkey Kingdom movie and while you explore the Smithsonian Research Center, the field researchers will guide you around the sets. Walking around the site, you'll be surprised at how many monkeys have made their homes within the ruins.
