This immersive walk blends nature, culture, and community, offering a glimpse into the tranquil rhythms of tribal life in North Wayanad.

  • Soaking up the verdant beauty and serene environs of one of India’s most treasured green spaces
  • Discovering “gandhakashala’ a rare and fragrant strain of rice
  • Sailing down the Kabini in an authentic local bamboo coracle

The leisurely 3-hour walk takes you through a beautiful jungle where the naturalist, who accompanies you, will draw your attention to the botanical wealth and faunal species which abound here. In a clearing deep in these woods, you will spend a short while in an ancient tribal temple. Such shrines are deeply revered by the Thirumugham, Elliampath, Cheriyamala, and Kandamala communities who maintain these temples.  Continuing on these wanderings you will come upon emerald field of paddy which hold a secret in their hearts. Adjoining the Kuruva islands – these fields are tended by local tribal communities, who cultivate a very rare, delicate strain of rice, called “gandhakashala”. This endemic strain of rice is famed for its fragrance.

A fun-filled crossing on an authentic local bamboo coracle on the Kabini River takes you across to the Aswathy Mess run by Umesh and Lizzie. You will enjoy a sumptuous ‘ela sadya’ at their home here. Rave reviews have been given to their lunch in a global newsletter by Kuoni.

After lunch you will enjoy an exhilarating 30-minute drive to the Thirunelli Temple. Revered as the ‘Kashi of the South’, it finds mention in Hindu scriptures that date back thousands of years. The journey to the iconic temple takes you lovely woodlands of Begur and Tholpetty wildlife sanctuaries. This is the perfect chance for a bit of wildlife spotting, elephants in particular, especially in the early mornings and evenings.

IMPORTANT   TIP

In case of animal presence in the vicinity, the forest department may sometimes restrict entry or deny permits to access the forest area. In such situations, the river crossing will not be possible; however, the rest of the program will continue as planned.
