What you will experience

This tour gives an insight into Kathmandu’s local markets and one can experience the local life. The markets south of Thamel (a popular tourist hub in Kathmandu) are the most famous and ancient in Nepal – with wares being sold either in wholesale or retail. You will also see how a local market place in Nepal has been designed for the convenience of its actual functioning!

The market place in Kathmandu offers the local community a public space that is inviting, safe, and a lively place where people interact easily while participating in the activities taking place. A lively, action-packed space the market place can in many parts become the heart and soul of the local community as it allows easy access to their daily needs. The vendors play a pivotal role in providing the community goods and services, typically through the day in permanent markets. For example, in the fruits and vegetable market, this public space serves both as a retail and wholesale market, supplied by farms or rural assembly centres, with small vendors purchasing their stock to service their commercial activities. The city has these public markets scattered in different pockets such as chowks, pati, sattal, bahal etc. With a growing populace, burgeoning development and traffic congestion it’s a challenge now on not only for consumer movement in the area but also for transportation, buying, selling, loading, unloading, handling and storage of goods. During this two hour walk, you see everything from residential areas, pagoda-shaped shrines stupa-style monuments, Shikhar-style temples, readymade wear markets, wedding markets, spice markets, fruit and vegetable market and much more.
