Self-driven, fuel-free, non-polluting – and a healthy form of exercise the bicycle offers you a liberating alternative to soak up the rich essence of the multiple charms of this old British capital from another perspective. And what marvellous stories this slow travel through a hectic city will create. As you go exploring the wondrous amalgam of the old and the new, your pedalling could carry you through its streets and lanes and green areas like the Race Course and Maidan. Kolkata’s urban landscape is a world of sharp contrasts…from the bustling world of Bow Bazaar to the colonial-days clubs, from the beautiful but crumbling mansions of Kolkata’s wealthy folk to the emerald golfing greens. And then there’s the Hoogly Bridge and the riverside culture at Babu Ghat
Armenian Ghat, the Flower Market and more… And yes there are the glorious expanses of the wetland, which are a whole new world of their own and perfect for cycling around.
We set out early morning, much before the rules against bicycles kick in, on an exploration of the old city of Calcutta – through its unique and interesting localities. Comfortable clothing, average biking ability, hugging corners while riding and listening to directions should give you a great exploration of the old city.
Based on the morning’s choice we can do: Colonial areas / the Black Town / the Grey Town / Localities by The River / East Calcutta Wetlands or a mix of everything.
