Though Kerala cuisine is traditionally vegetarian, the interaction with different settlers resulted in the locals also adopting some of their culinary traditions. Kerala favourites such as vindaloo, grilled sardines, Kerala fish curry, crumb chops, ball curry, coconut rice, etc all have their origin in Portuguese food culture. The seafarers also brought with them vegetables, fruits and cash crops, which became an integral part of Kerala cuisine; a case in point is Tapioca (cassava), of which there are now many preparations. Kerala, which is known as the “Land of Spices” and Cochin which is called “Queen of the Arabian Sea”, is where the spices and seafood meet.
