Monasteries and Momos

Like one of our guests said, ‘I went to sleep in India but woke up in Tibet’ that pretty much sums up this tour, a glimpse of Tibet.

The visit takes you to the oldest Tibetan settlement in India. You will learn a lot about the dangerous journey over the Himalayas that these settlers had to take to flee from their homeland Tibet, as they followed in the footsteps of their spiritual and temporal leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Visit the awe-inspiring monasteries, the home of Tibetan Buddhist teachings. You will meet the monks be introduced to their monastic way of life. From the making of prayer flags to incense sticks to carpet weaving, learn and engross yourself in how they are a truly self-sustainable community

  • Visit one of the largest Tibetan refugee settlements, home to more than 35,000 Tibetan settlers.
  • Visit the famous Sera Jey and interact with the monks as they finish their breakfast.
  • Learn to make momos the popular Himalayan dish and enjoy it over lunch

The tour takes us to the Bylakuppe Tibetan Settlement set on lazy sprawl of 3,000 acres, where the exiled Tibetans, fleeing the Chinese invaders from their homeland, were provided refuge by the Indian government in 1962. The Namdrolling Monastery is home to over 3,000 Buddhist monks. The complex includes the Golden Temple, a high school, a nunnery, a research centre and many other set-ups to support the community. A huge draw is the golden Buddha statues. You will take a walk down the residential settlements to understand how the settlement is divided into different camps.  You will also get to visit the women's cooperative for interaction and learn about how the women self-help groups are supporting the community.  A visit to the local workshop will show us how prayer flags, incense sticks and carpets are made in the settlement itself. The settle celebrates traditional festivals like Losar (Tibetan New Year) in February /March, with great pageantry, and attracts many visitors.
